2004 World Show Band Championships and Music Festival

An innovative competitive event open to traditional parade bands, show bands and drum corps
and bands who have not previously performed live music to movement.
The rationale behind this part of the World Championships and Music Festival is to present a new concept in ‘Youth Marching Music’ – a theatre/cabaret style show of small scale set pieces – live music interpreted with marching, manoeuvre and (if chosen) dance. This could open up all kinds of future opportunities for increasing our audience profile and extending performance repertoires – perhaps mostly in the winter months. Whilst this is a competitive event, there will be no winners – the judging will award performances with gold, silver or bronze awards. Entrants are expected to enter into the ‘festival spirit’ of this new initiative.
Raw Rhythm is open to all bands and corps whether or not they have entered the World Championships. Music played can be from competitive arena shows or from a wider repertoire. It is hoped that bands / corps will enter more than one group.
This show will be performed in the 1000 seater Tregonwell Theatre within the Bournemouth International Centre, This is on the sea front, has a popular leisure pool, and therefore attracts lots of passing public. Entry to the show will be free of charge to encourage holidaymakers and local people to see the performances
Access to the theatre for instruments and cast is by an easily accessed side doors to the left of the stage (from the audience), very close to truck parking. Each group will have an allocated morning ‘dress rehearsal’ period of approximately 20 minutes to familiarise themselves with the stage setting. Uniforms need not be worn though bands might consider wearing something appropriate to the music played to add to the theatrical experience.
The performance area is split level. The 0.6m raised stage area to the rear is semi octagonal, the audience front being 13m x 9m deep to the back wall with the back corners cut away. Side and back walls are solid, front curtains are unlikely to be used. The front and lower performance area is rectangular, 15m front by 9m deep, surrounded by a safety barrier up against which audience chairs may be placed. (In theatrical terms ‘in the round’)

As this is a festival and a new initiative rules have been kept to a minimum
1. Each performance unit must consist of a minimum of 6 and maximum of 15 performers. These must include a combination of wind players and percussionists and may or may not include ancillary performers. This is a youth orientated event, therefore a proportion of the performers ought be under the age of 18 – though this is not essential
2. The main body of the performance should be ‘on the move’ (pit percussionists excepted!) with a maximum of three ten-second static periods in a show lasting between 3 and 5 minutes.
3. Each group will be allowed 2 minutes setting up time – it is important to keep this to a minimum to aid continuity and create a smooth seamless show. (We may request soloists or other performers to entertain the audience during these periods)
4. No scenery will be allowed. Pit percussion as advised nearer the time will be in place for all units to use if needed (to avoid lengthy change-over breaks between performances) Further instrumentation can of course be added within the 2 minute setting up time allowed.
5. Footwear suitable for stage use should be worn (most shoes and non-studded boots will be acceptable)
6. It is intended that a single continuous background lighting colour will be available to add contrast to each performance. The colour will be negotiated during the morning rehearsal period
7. Order of play will be decided by the organisers to create a varied and interesting show for the audience. This will be advised before the day.
8. Amplified music will not be allowed
Judging
1. There will be two judges. One with a parade band background and one with a show band/drum corps background.
2. The scores from each judge will be added together and then divided in two for the final score. The final score will not be published (see below)
3. The scoring system will be based on that used in the World Championships and already published – repertoire, performance, choreography and show design each having an artistic and technical caption. The awarding of gold, silver and bronze awards will also follow the World Association guidelines as published. However, this is a British Federation not a World Association event with awards not being transferable or comparable.
4. There are no classes, divisions or categories – all entries will be similarly judged
5. Judging will commence and end when the lead musician bows (noticeable movement of the head) at the start and end of each performance

(Note -The concept of this initiative is based on ‘Star of Indiana’s’ international production of blast! and the subsequent show performed by The Senators Drum and Bugle Corps, for which we are indebted in being permitted to use their show title ‘Raw Rhythm’)
