MATERI PERCUSSION CLINIC by JAMES ANCONA :
GRIB & EXERCISE
– 2 mallet Grips – Front fulcrum OR CAVALIER back fulcrum – play with wrist
– 4 mallet grips – cross stick (Burton) OR STEVEN' Technique
MALLETS FOR MARCHING BANDS
– Weight is very important – heavy mallets will help with volume and help to produce a dark, full sound on all pit instruments (keyboard, timpani, bass drum & etc)
– Suggested mallets by Inovative Percussion
– The Cavaliers use hard mallets for most of the show (75% of performance and for exercise) medium mallets about 15% of performance and mallets for rolled sections. We DO NOT use very hard mallets often.
BALANCING THE PIT TO THE BAND
– Instrument that tend to be OVER-BALANCE (too loud)
– Common problems that cause UNDER-BALANCE (too soft)
CREATING NEW COLORS WITH THE PIT
– Mallet selection will help with all instrument – try extremely hard or extremely soft mallets for variety – switch mallets between phrases
– Register of keyboard – try parts in different octaves (very high or very low)
– Have keyboard NOT PLAY for a phrase – when the start to play again, their sound will be “fresh”
– Accessory instruments – these are unique sounds for ensemble, use them often (triangles, tambourine, cymbals, shakers, gongs, etc)
ARRANGING THE PIT INSTRUMENTS
– Create the setup BEFORE you write the music – this will also help to create musical effect and new colors
– The keyboard “Choir” setup
– Wood versus Metal Setup
– Timpani in the middle setup
– Basic composition ideas for the pit
– Musical roles of the pit
COMMUNICATIONFROM the PIT TO THE BAND
– Basic idea is to listen back to the battery and band, but this won't solve all problems
– Asign a Lead Player in the pit – this couldbe the person playing xylophone, or the most active part, or the best player
– Use mallet cues – like chamber music (watch the lead player's mallets)
– If you can't hear the battery, sometimes tou have to turn your body and watch their feet as they march
– Sometimes you have to watch the conductor/drum major. Make sure you don't play ahead of the band
– Make sure that instruments that usually over-balance don't prevent players from hearing the band.
