Apa kabar untuk semua pencinta marching band di Indonesia! Sungguh sulit di
percaya bahwa waktu itu saya berada di Jakarta beberapa minggu yang lalu, menjadi
juri perkusi di DMC 2007, diantara kesibukan saya bepergian ke China minggu
sebelumnya, dan sekarang berada di Malaysia, dan kemudian kembali ke China dan
Thailand. Sebetulnya saya menulis artikel ini di Airport Express Train ke Kuala
Lumpur International Airport di Malaysia.

Pengalaman saya di Jakarta adalah suatu pengalaman yang fenomenal. Di samping
saya harus mengevaluasi segala faktor (dalam tingkatan yang berbeda pula) ensembel
marching, saya juga dapat menikmati semua pertandingan saat itu. Dari semua
semangat dari para peserta, antusias dari penonton, dan profesionalisme dari
pihak panitia, saya sangat kagum. Saya rasa perkembangan MB di Indonesia akan
sangat maju sekali.

Dalam hal ini, berikut adalah pemikiran dan saran saya dalam rangka mengembangan
marching percussion ke tingkat yang berikutnya. Semua saran ini akan berguna
bagi pit dan battery:

  • Peka terhadap winds instrument (brass atau music section)
    Ada suatu hal dimana kalian bermain dengan penuh bakat dan kemampuan, namun
    selalu ingat bahwa kalian bermain sebagai suatu ensembel. Apabila ada solo
    di winds (brass section), biarkan mereka membawakan solo tersebut (dengan
    balance suara yang lebih pelan). Dan apabila memang Percussion Feature, silakan
    anda bersolo dan mengambil alih peran.
  • Peka terhadap seksi perkusi lainnya.
    Ada kalanya terdapat kualitas permainan battery dan pit yang cukup saat itu.
    Namun, sesuatu yang spesial dalam marching percussion adalah menjadikan semuanya
    satu section yang utuh. Untuk battery, tolong perhatikan balancing dan blend
    suara dengan pit section. Dan untuk pit, kuncinya adalah tolong dengarkan
    suara battery dari belakang untuk tempo dan irama yang tepat.
  • Peka terhadap not yang anda mainkan.
    Jaman sekarang percussion section dapat memainkan not yang banyak dengan tingkat
    kesulitan yang cukup tinggi. Tapi tolong juga perhatikan not-not atau hal-hal
    yang mudah, dimainkan dengan secara bersih dan secara musikal. Saya sering
    mengajarkan kepada murid dan ensembel (untuk marching dan klasik) bahwa TIDAK
    ADA SUATU HAL YANG MUDAH. Tinggal tergantung anda seberapa detail dan bersih
    pada musik anda. Yang penting, buatlah tujuan musik anda setinggi mungkin.
  • Mengerti fungsi/posisi anda dalam sebuah ensembel
    Apakah tempo battery akan berada diatas tempo drum major dan mengendalikan
    tempo satu grup? Apakah pit section mengabaikan tempo field commander agar
    mereka dapat menyesuaikan tempo yang ada dilapangan? Kadang kalanya, dua-duanya
    betul, namun ada kalanya juga dua-duanya juga salah. Tolong dimengerti kapan
    saatnya satu section mengendalikan tempo dan kapan mendengarkan tempo. Ini
    akan membedakan mana band yang ensembelnya benar-benar di ‘semir’
    dan mana band yang biasa saja.
  • Integrasikan anda dalam satu band atau corps
    Ini tergantung pada arransemen anda. Apakah arransemen pit dan battery membuat
    suatu harmonisasi musikal dengan winds/brass? Apakah penempatan pit dan battery
    mengganggu atau mendukung pagelaran? Apakah arransemen perkusi dimasukkan
    dalam pagelaran dan mengabsorbsi suara winds dan colorguard? Atau malah merusak
    konsep pagelaran?
  • Dilarang melupakan teknik dasar.
    Apapun yang kita perbuat adalah berdasarkan suatu prinsip atau landasan. Seandainya
    sebuah bangunan mempunyai landasan atau struktur yang lemah, maka akan cepat
    runtuh. Berlatihlah dengan giat latihan dasarnya agar lebih konsisten, bersih
    dan seragam setiap saat. Teknik yang bagus memungkinkan anda untuk bermain
    yang terbaik setiap kali. Namun teknik dasar membuat anda bermain lebih musikal
    dan indah untuk dilihat.

Karena kereta saya mau sampai ke airport, saya akan simpulkan antara lain
bahwa kegiatan ini akan terus berkembang di Indonesia, namun jangan berpuas
diri dulu. Kegiatan ini harus tumbuh dan berkembang terus, disamping harus ada
inovasi-inovasi lainnya. Dan saya harapkan terus memonitor perkem angan ini.

Saya nantikan kabar dari anda saat saya berada di Jakarta. Jangan ragu untuk
bertanya, ya?

OFF TO A GREAT START:
An Initial Analysis of the Indonesian Marching Percussion Scene

Hello to all fans of the marching activity in Indonesia! It is hard to believe
I was in Jakarta, only a few weeks ago, judging percussion at the Darunnajah
Marching Band Competition. Hard to believe because, in the short period in between,
I have been to China, am in Malaysia right now, and over the next two weeks,
will be in China again (another province entirely), as well as Thailand. In
fact, I am writing my thoughts while on the Airport Express Train to Kuala Lumpur
International Airport (Malaysia).

My experience in Jakarta was just phenomenal. In addition to evaluating all
sorts (and many different levels) of marching ensembles, I was able to sit back
and enjoy the whole thing. The intensity of the performers, the passion of the
fans, the professionalism of the competition organizers, as a whole, just blew
me away. I think there is an incredibly bright future for marching groups in
Indonesia.

On that note, here are my thoughts on what it will take to bring marching percussion
to the next level there. All of the following apply equally to the pit and the
marching battery.

  • Be sensitive to the winds. There is some great talent and playing out there,
    but remember that it always needs to make sense within the scheme of the ensemble.
    If the winds are the solo voice at a given moment, let them have their moment
    in the sun. If it’s a percussion feature, go ahead and take charge!
  • Be sensitive to the others in percussion. There are quality drum lines
    and quality pits in this activity. However, the real special marching percussion
    ensembles function as one section. For the battery – increased attention to
    balance and blend with the pit; and for the pit – listening back to the battery
    for tighter ensemble, are key.
  • Be intense with every note you play. These days, percussion sections play
    more and more notes, with harder and harder licks. But, make sure the “easy
    stuff” is played just as cleanly and just as musically. I constantly
    preach to my students and ensembles (both marching and classical) that there
    is no such thing as “easy” – it’s up to you how detailed
    you want to be with the music. Aim as high as you can!
  • Understand your function within the full ensemble. Should the battery be
    right on top of the drum major’s hands and drive the whole group? Should
    the pit ignore what the field commander is doing in order to play tighter
    with what is backfield? Sometimes, both apply, and sometimes, neither applies.
    Understanding when to drive and when to hang back “in the groove”
    can make the difference between a polished ensemble and a mediocre one.
  • Integrate into the whole band or corps. This starts with the writing. Does
    the pit and battery book make musical sense with the winds? Is the staging
    of the battery or pit distracting from the visual package or enhancing it?
    Is the percussion sometimes absorbed into the winds and colorguard, or is
    it, instead, always annoyingly standing out?
  • Never forget the technical fundamentals. Everything we do in life is based
    on foundation. Imagine a building with a weak foundation – there is
    only so much one can build on it before it collapses. Strive for hand-to-hand
    consistency and clean attacks and releases at all times. Great technique will
    permit you to play at your best at all times. Apply what you learn in your
    practice sessions directly to the show. Strong fundamentals result in a tighter
    musical package and are very impressive to see, as well.

As my train approaches the airport, I will close by telling you all that things
are off to a great start in Indonesia, but don’t be complacent. The activity
must continue to grow and improve, as well as break new ground. And I hope to
closely monitor its development.
