Beruntung marching band kita memiliki Citraintirama(CI) dan Wijayamusik(WM). Keduanya sanggup mendatangkan marching artist specialist dari luar negeri. Kalau CI mendatangkan James Acona dari Amrik, maka WM mendatangkan Sven Parris dari Inggris. Sebenarnya juri pada GPMB XXIII paling banyak bulenya, dua lagi adalah Rene Conway dan Andy Dougharty. Dua terakhir ini sudah cukup lama membantu perkembangan marching di tanah air, sampai keduanya memiliki istri orang Indonesia. Jadinya jika mereka dipilih menjadi juri dikejuaraan manapun di tanah air kita sudah mengetahui profile mereka.

Ketua Dewan Juri GPMB XXIII sudah mengumumkan susunan juri dan kita sambut dengan pikiran positip. Nilai plus bagi panitia penyelenggara dalam hal ini Yayasan GPMB karena pada pelaksanaan GPMB yang ke XXIII bisa mendatangkan juri dari luar negeri, dan tentu menambah kekuatan(strong) pada susunan juri yang ada dan penilaian nantinya. Bagaimanapun orang kita masih melihat kalau jurinya bule pasti percaya deh.....

Nah untuk menambah kepercayaan tersebut, redaksi mendapatkan beberapa data dari internet mengenai kedua juri. Sven Parris secara khusus memberikan biodatanya untuk artikel ini (Thanks Sven).

I began my marching career in 1984 aged 11 with the Crowborough Scouts, I have since arranged and taught battery at 6th Hove after ageing out as Drum Major in 1998.

Originally a graphic designer by profession, I now am very fortunate to work at Premier Percussion as the Marching Product Specialist. My job takes me around the world, working with marching musicians of all types from National Military, to Pipe Band and Drum and Bugle Corps.

I can honestly say the marching activity has given me so much, not least all the true friends I have, and I truly consider my corps to be my second family!

I like to work hard, I expect a positive team attitude from everybody that I work with, and I believe that being involved in the marching arts is something to be proud of and ENJOY above all else!

6th Hove is a contemporary drum & bugle corps based in Brighton UK the membership consists of young people aged between 8 and 25 who want to learn music and performance skills, form life-long friendships and have a great time! The corps mission is to provide a high quality experience to the members and staff and provide a year-round program of exciting and challenging activities.

The corps competes at the highest level in the UK and Europe, consistently finishing in the top 3 in UK national Division 1 and often finishing in the top 10 in Drum Corps Europe Division 1.

Unlike DCI, members don’t need to pass an audition to join the corps, indeed many members come with little or no musical experience. There is a place for any young person who has a desire to learn and perform with other motivated individuals.

Drum and bugle corps are smaller in the UK; 6th Hove only 45 members, but the commitment is no less demanding, and achievement no less rewarding!

Members are taught to play and perform and can achieve musical qualifications through the corps.

Membership to the 6th Hove requires dedication, self-discipline, and commitment. Members develop leadership and teamwork skills that they can use throughout their lives. It’s also lots of fun!

I started my drumming career in 1984 with the Crowborough Scouts; where I played bass drum, quads and then snare drum and marched in the 6th Hove drumline from 1994 to 1996 as centre snare, I then served from 1997 to 2001 as drum major. During this time the corps enjoyed some success in national Division 2 competition. I took over in 2003 as Percussion Caption Head, where the corps underwent a major re-building with an almost entirely new staff and membership. We developed the corps (particularly the drumline) quickly both in terms of ability and reputation and the corps took the national Division 2 title in 2003 and 2004. For the 2005 season the corps was promoted to national Division 1 and began competing in European Division 1 competition.

The corps has achieved competitive success and earned a reputation for professionalism and sportsmanship, and often performs in arenas beyond the drum corps idiom. This has included radio performance, stage productions, workshops and a live performance in front of 80,000 people on a Brighton beach, backed by parachutists, jet-skis and fireworks!

In the winter of 2007 the corps is one of a few to pioneer the UK indoor percussion activity with a WGI-style marching percussion show.

In 2007 I was invited to part of the hand-picked staff of the British Youth Band Association’s prestigious ‘Festival of Fun & Music’, where I taught the ‘percussion 1’ beginners group (a challenging and rewarding group including some young people with learning difficulties and physical disability).

James Ancona is an Assistant Professor of Music at the University of Delaware. He is the Assistant Director of the Blue Hen Marching Band, and Co-Director of the Symphonic Band. James received his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and his Master’s Degree in Performance from Indiana University where he was awarded the prestigious Performer’s Certificate. His former teachers include Gerald Carlyss, Thomas Hannum, William Roberts, Peter Tanner, and Leigh Howard Stevens.

James is the Percussion Caption Head for the 7 time DCI World Champion Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps and the Front Ensemble Arranger for the 2007 WGI Silver Medalist Penn State Indoor Drumline. James has many years experience as an arranger and instructor for world class drum and bugle corps including Star of Indiana, Santa Clara Vanguard, The Glassmen, The Crossmen and Carolina Crown. Other honors in the activity include having been a member of the 1990 DCI World Champion Cadets of Bergen County and having been on the instructional staff of Star of Indiana’s (1993) and Santa Clara Vanguard’s (2004) World Champion percussion sections. His Vanguard Percussion Ensembles and Mixed Ensembles (with brass) have won at the Drum Corps International Individual and Ensemble Championships. Several of his percussion arrangements appear on Star of Indiana’s “Brass Theater” and “BLAST” (the Tony and Emmy Award winning Broadway show) compact discs and are published by Tap Space Publications. James is the co-author of Up Front: A Complete Resource for Today’s Pit Ensemble and Up Front Etudes.

He is an endorser and clinician for the Avedis Zildjian Company, Remo, Inc., Pearl Drums and Adams Percussion, and a Signature Artist for Innovative Percussion, Incorporated.
